Education is a big topic this election. The debate is always about funding. The public schools in the cities get around $14,000 in funding and the kids in Chisago County get around $8,000. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see how unfair that is. However is more money going to solve our education problems?

The United States spends more money on education than any other country in the industrialized world and yet when you compare US student test scores with those in other countries in the industrialized world we rank in the bottom 25%. Are we really preparing our children to compete in a global economy? If we can’t compete against kids in other countries when we are spending more money on education than all the rest how are we going to solve the problem by spending even more money?

We need legislators in St. Paul who can show true leadership to improve our schools. It tales courage to make a comprehensive and honest assessment of our school system, not spend more money because that is the politically correct thing to do. This election, let’s send legislators to Saint Paul who are principled and courageous leaders, leaders who will bring creativity, innovation and fiscal discipline to big issues like education. Bob Barrett is running for Minnesota House and Sean Nienow is running for the Minnesota Senate. Their predecessors did not solve the problem, in fact made it worse with their inability to control spending and now Minnesota is facing a 5.8 billion dollar deficit. It is time for new leadership.
